Second Harvest is excited to announce the upcoming opening of Harvest on Main Community Market, a brand-new nonprofit fresh food market designed to nourish our community and bring healthy, affordable food options back to Sharpsburg. Harvest on Main is on track to open its doors in early 2026.

For decades Sharpsburg residents have struggled without easy access to fresh groceries. As one lifelong Sharpsburg resident told us, “I remember when there were a lot of little corner stores. We would go get penny candy and bread and lunch meat.” Now, says another neighbor, “I see many of my friends buying their groceries at Family Dollar. There’s nothing fresh there. And that’s a problem if you buy most of your groceries there.” Harvest on Main Community Market is here to change that.

Closing the Food Gap

Did you know that there is nowhere to buy a banana in Sharpsburg? The nearest grocery store is nearly two miles away—and for many residents without reliable transportation, that’s a barrier to healthy eating. Harvest on Main Community Market will shrink the distance to the closest grocery store to just a few blocks for many residents, and be accessible on the bus line for many others in Sharpsburg and beyond.

Just as important as making fresh food more accessible is making it more affordable. Harvest on Main will offer produce at zero margin, passing our savings on fruits and vegetables along to our customers and ensuring that our most nutritious food is the most affordable. Shoppers will also be able to use SNAP and Food Bucks benefits to stretch their budgets even further.

More Than a Market

Harvest on Main Community Market isn’t just about groceries—it’s about community. The market is designed to serve as a familiar neighborhood hub where people can find belonging, connection, and support. It’s also creating new local jobs and engaging volunteers to create a welcoming environment rooted in service to the community.

A Sustainable Solution

With this project, Second Harvest is renewing our commitment to meet critical material and relational needs in Sharpsburg. Second Harvest’s first nonprofit retail venture, the Community Thrift Store, turned cash flow-positive in the first year and has since grossed over $2 million in revenue to support that mission. Just like the Community Thrift Store, Harvest on Main endeavors to generate regular, reliable revenue sufficient to cover the full cost of doing business without relying on private donations to serve our community in the long term.
